Leviathan, Part One: Demon Star
When DC Comics started the New 52, there were already a couple of comics featuring Batman in the lineup. Batman Incorporated was a part of the “second wave” of new 52 comics, likely to give a little bit of breathing room and to not saturate the market completely with Batman, even though Batman is, and always has been, one of the most popular characters, you still don’t want to overdo it and have people getting tired of him and his adventures. So, after the launch of the original New 52, we get a second wave which includes Batman Incorporated, so let’s take a look at the first issue right now.
Characters In This Issue
This issue features a lot of characters. We’ll list the primary ones you would expect, a long with a few more – but we’ll also leave a few unmentioned so as to not give away too much, and to leave you with some surprises. For starters, you’ll find Alfred, who is the loyal servant and father figure to Bruce Wayne, who has been by his side since childhood when Bruce’s parents were killed in cold blood right before his very eyes. Also Damian Wayne, the son of Bruce Wayne, and the current Robin is also featured prominently in this series. Jason Todd is the previous Robin and he’s here too, along with Talia al Ghul (Mother of Damian), Halo, Pandora, The Heretic, Goatboy and more.
Summary Of The New 52 Batman Incorporated Issue 1
The opening pages of this issue show Batman being arrested, telling Alfred that it's all over. It cuts away from that scene, perhaps a look into the future, to show Batman and Robin fighting against bad guys in a butcher shop. We're also introduced to Goatboy, and learn that his name comes from a Bill Hicks bit (Bill Hicks is a cult-favorite stand-up comedian from the 1990s.) Leviathan has an evil plan, and that mission is revealed soon. Will Batman and Robin, the Dynamic Duo, be able to stop Goatboy and Leviathan before things get out of hand? Somebody wants Damian dead, find out who it is… Do they really want to harm Damian, or just to get Batman’s attention? Time will tell
Notes About Batman Incorporated Issue 1
- Grant Morrison is one of the most beloved writers that the Batman series has seen, with handfuls of classics under his belt over the years, and he makes his return in Batman, Inc. More on that in a moment…
- Morrison makes a few references to make it clear that this story is taking place in the universe of The New 52, where not everything is as it was before the re-launch of the DC Universe, but he doesn’t go overboard (like certain other books did) either.
Creators Of The New 52 Batman Incorporated Issue 1
In time, we aim to profile all of the staff members who worked on this series, but let’s start with the legend himself, Grant Morrison. Mr. Morrison is a very prolific figure in the comic book world, especially when it comes to Batman. He wrote the Arkham Asylum book, which would later go on to sell over 600,000 copies and inspire the hands-down best Batman videogame of the same name. The Dark Knight returns is another iconic book written by Grant Morrison, and who can forget about The Watchmen? There are plenty more, but we don’t have all day…
